Metković

Metković is the second largest city in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is situated on the banks of the river Neretva, on the border with Herzegovina. Metković is the administrative, economic, and cultural centre of the Neretva Valley.

The city has good traffic connections, via the A1 highway and the Adriatic Coastal Road, and there is a dock on the river Neretva in the centre of the city. Since ancient times, Metković has been an important transit point of the Neretva Valley, Dalmatia, and beyond.
The Metković city area has been populated since antiquity, and evidence for this can be found at numerous archaeological sites, the most important of which is the site of Ancient Narona in Vid. The archaeological museum in Narona is the first in situ museum in Croatia. This manner of presenting an archeological site enriched the museum offerings not only in Metković, but also in the country as a whole.
The area of Metković and the Neretva Valley is full of diverse flora and fauna. Several ornithological reserves and other types of protected natural areas are situated near Metković. The Mediterranean climate makes the summers long and hot, while the winters are mild.

Metković is a city with a strong cultural and sporting life. The economy is traditionally based on agriculture, and in the last few years, it has started to discover and use its tourist potential. Different cultural, folklore, and other events take place in the city throughout the year. Its rich gastronomic and oenological offerings add to the appeal of the city, together with its cultural, historical, and natural heritage.
Metković has a kindergarten, elementary school, and high school. It is perfect for families and individuals seeking a peaceful, but eventful life.
